Does receiving a lot of information on WhatsApp or forward messages from friends overwhelm and irritate you sometimes? Guess what you are in the right place to know why it feels like that!
I sincerely hope you are doing well. First of all, let me tell you one thing. You are not alone in feeling of being overwhelmed and confused with such a whole lot of data coming in the news channels or in social media, even I feel irritated and confused too! But you know what, before making an irrational comment like "What am I supposed to do if people in Africa are suffering? "or "Why are people always shouting about educate yourself in this or that, What's the point?"..... Let me tell you one thing, aren't you the one who speaks about #equalityforall on social media platforms with lines after lines of ranting about how our society is not doing anything about the deteriorating condition of the economy?
Guess what when you have double standards, you can't expect to have a proper governmental action.
If you have a privileged position, if you have a platform, you must also be aware of the fact that there is something called "being RESPONSIBLE" . Responsible individuals are those citizens who educate themselves with all the happenings around us, that might as well influence us, or our own society, because we all know we are more of a global village. Sitting inside our own bubble, won't let us explore the complete picture of the whole world. If taking a stand or speaking up seems intimidating or too daunting a task, then we can at least try to educate ourselves. You have the privilege to educate yourself, or access tons of information, which many people can't even access. Educational inequality is still a massive thing not only in India, but in many parts of the world. The literacy rate has however improved in the recent times, the last year rate being 77.7%, which is still a decent one.
But the sad truth of the society is that, we still do not have the level of enthusiasm or zeal to educate ourselves, why...well there are ample number of reasons.
It is because education has become a process of competition, a value based learning has turned out to be a service to be bought and sold, all thanks to the globalization process and the famous influence of capitalism. But even if we do see such a bright literacy rate, we might forget the level of inadequate resources available to connect in the network of information which flows throughout the world called the internet, due to which many children have even dropped out of school, not being able to complete their education. So that is why it is our inherent responsibility to have a correct utilization of the opportunity and privilege that we have in our hands to learn, to educate and to spread the messages of help. Being aware and having a decent sense of knowledge could help you take a step in stopping any kind of political, social or economic malfunction in your society.
I understand that it feels irritating in reading so many messages, but trust me, educating yourself also makes you aware what is the truth and what is not. Helping others might as well be helpful to us, because as a global village technically any country feels like a neighbor, so helping for a cause of humanity is never a waste of time.
Signing a petition and studying it takes hardly 10 to 15 minutes. Know your true potential and abilities. It is high time we utilize the privilege to make a difference, no matter how small the difference is.
